ClearBooks Review 2026: A UK Indie Worth Considering

ClearBooks is a UK-built cloud accounting product that has quietly stayed independent. We assess its strengths for small businesses, charities and accountants.

While Xero, QuickBooks and Sage dominate UK cloud accounting conversation, ClearBooks has carved out a respected niche as a UK-built, UK-owned, independent platform. It is HMRC-recognised, MTD-compliant and offers some specific strengths that occasionally make it the right answer for our clients.

Who ClearBooks is best for

ClearBooks suits UK small businesses, charities and sole traders that want a straightforward, UK-focused cloud accounting tool without the integration complexity of larger platforms. Charities in particular benefit from ClearBooks' SORP-aware reporting features and fund accounting capability, which Xero and QuickBooks handle only with third-party plugins.

  • Charity reporting: Built-in fund tracking and SORP-compatible reporting.
  • UK payroll: Integrated payroll module with RTI submission.
  • VAT and MTD: Fully MTD-recognised with a clear VAT return workflow.
  • Pricing: Competitive across the small business tiers.

Where ClearBooks falls short

The integrations ecosystem is materially smaller than Xero or QuickBooks. If you need to connect Shopify, Amazon FBA, Stripe in complex ways, or use sector-specific apps like ServiceM8, the support is limited. The mobile app, while functional, is not on the level of Xero or QuickBooks for daily field-team use. Multi-currency capability exists but is less polished.

How it handles MTD ITSA

ClearBooks has been part of the MTD ITSA pilot programme and is confirmed for April 2026 readiness. For sole-trader and landlord clients without complex integration needs, it is a credible alternative to Xero or FreeAgent.

Should you consider it?

The honest answer is: ClearBooks is rarely our first recommendation for a typical SME, but for charities, social enterprises and UK-focused small businesses prioritising simplicity, it is a real alternative worth evaluating. For a tech-enabled scaleup with complex integrations, Xero or QuickBooks will serve better.
